Upward Scholars

Upward Scholars connects with first-generation immigrant college students to provide guidance and support for their education journey. The organization offers adult students financial, academic, career development, and holistic services. Students focus on becoming fluent in English to move into higher-paying jobs and continue their education at local adult schools, community colleges, and universities. Upward Scholars empowers students to reach their full potential while bringing their families and communities up with them.

Since 2021, the Community Foundation of San Carlos has granted Upward Scholars $35,000, with $10,000 in support in 2024. This grant funding provided eighteen San Carlos community members with basic school resources like textbooks and transportation to support services like mental health counseling, paid internships, and career development. Our congratulations go out to two San Carlans who walked the stage at their college commencement ceremonies last year, where they received English proficiency certificates.

Get involved with Upward Scholars by becoming a tutor or participating in their conversation club to help students develop English language skills.
