Day 16: Education and School-Aged Children
CHALLENGES
OPTION 1: California Missions. Check out the Zinn Education Project: Lying to Children About the California Mission and the Indians by Deborah A. Miranda.
OPTION 2: Diversity in Publishing. Half of all school-aged children are non-white. Yet, there are still disparities in book publishing. Of children’s books published in 2013, though, only 10.5% featured a person of color. In 2016, this number doubled to 22%, but white is still the “default identity.” Take a look at Lee & Low’s annual Diversity baseline survey.
OPTION 3: Read this article about talking to kids about race and racism.
